The superior devotee, the soul and the supersoul
Caitanya Caritāmṛta Madhya 8. 275
sarva-bhūteṣu yaḥ paśyed bhagavad bhāvam ātmanaḥ
bhūtāni bhagavaty ātmany eṣa bhāgavatottamaḥ
He who sees in all beings - yaḥ paśyed sarva-bhūteṣu
the (individual) soul (who) has the nature of the Transcendental Lord - ātmanaḥ bhāvam bhagavad
and the (Supreme) Soul which is the Transcendental Lord in all beings,- ātmani bhagavati bhūtāni
this is the superior devotee. - eṣaḥ bhāgavata-uttamaḥ
Tika: In the Svetāśvatara Upaniṣad (4.6) and in the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad (3.1.1) it is said:
dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā / samānaḥ vṛkṣaḥ pariṣasvajāte
tayor anyaḥ pippalaḿ svādv atty / anaṣnann anyo abhicākaṣeti
Two birds (as two) closely related friends - dvā suparṇā sakhāyāā sayujā
are in the same tree (body) and are of the same (spiritual) family. - samānaḥ vṛkṣaḥ pariṣasvajāte
One of them (the individual soul) tastes by consuming its (the tree's) fruits - anyaḥ tayor svādv atty anaṣnann
The other (the Supersoul) merely watches (observes, takes cognizance). - anyo abhicākaṣeti
In the last chapter of the Bhagavad-gīta (Bg. 18.61) Śrī Krsna reminds that in the form of the Supersoul, He is in the heart of everyone.
īśvaravaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāḿ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna tiṣṭhati
bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayāā
O Arjuna, the Supreme Controller is- arjuna īśvaraḥ tiṣṭhati
in the heart-zone of all beings, - hṛd-deśe sarva-bhūtānāḿ
making all beings to travel - sarva-bhūtāni bhrāmayan
boarding a car (material body) made of illusory energy. - arūūḍhāni yantra māyayāā
In the Bhagavad-gita, Śrī Krishna also says:
upadraṣṣṭānumantā ca bhartā bhoktā maheśvaraḥ
paramātmeti cāpy ukto dehe 'smin puruṣaḥ paraḥ paraḥ
In the material body there is a superior puruṣa. - dehe 'smin puruṣaḥ paraḥ
He is also called the Supersoul - parama-ātma - as apy ukto paramātma iti
The one who is the witness, the one who gives permission, - upadraṣṭa anumantā
He who maintains, the owner and Supreme Controller. - bhartā bhoktā mahā iśvaraḥ
In Śrimad-Bhāgavatam (11.11.5-6) Shri Krsna addresses Uddhava saying:
atha baddhasya baddhasya muktasya vailakṣaṇyaḿ vadāmi te
viruddha-dharmiṇos tāta sthitayor eka-dharmiṇi
suparṇāv etau sadṛśau sakhāyau yadṛcchayaitau kṛta-nīḍau ca vṛkṣe
ekas tayoḥ khādati pippalānnam anyo niranno 'pi balena bhūyān
So, my dear one, I will tell you about the different characteristics - atha tāta vadāmi te vailakṣaṇyaḿ
of the bound soul (in the material world) and the Liberated One (Supreme Lord), - baddhasya muktasya
whose natures are opposite - viruddha-dharmiṇos
being thus situated in one (same) body. - sthitayor eka-dharmiṇi
These friends are like birds (who by the arrangement) - etau sakhāyau sadṛśau suparṇāu
of providence (Kṛṣṇa's Will) have made a nest in the same tree. - yadṛcchaya kṛta-nīḍau ca vṛkṣe
One eats from the fruits of this pipal tree (the results of the body's actions), - ekas tayoḥ khādati pippalānnam
yet the other does not eat at all, - api anyah niranno
because of the power of its extraordinary greatness. - balena bhūyān
