
36-53 Kṛṣṇa’s Nitamba, waist and belly
36-37
From his waist up Kṛṣṇa's body resembles a new Tamāla. Around his waist a nīlamaṇi
dam holds the water of beauty. Kṛṣṇa's Kiṅkinīs are the quacking swans in this amṛta
sarovar."
Mañjuvāk says, "The queen of Rādhā's mind always reclines on Kṛṣṇa's bodily Siṁhāsana.
So, for her comfort, the Creator added to it the soft sapphire moon pillows of His
Nitamba.
38-39 "Aha re! Let me praise the lower portion of Kṛṣṇa's Nitamba!" exclaims
Kalokti. "Here is the nectar lake and a flood of Mādhurya for the Vraja Sundarīs'
darting minnow eyes.
Aha! The fold under Kṛṣṇa's navel is an Amṛta river, and his navel is an Amṛta
lake. So, on these banks the queen of Rādhā's mind performs Rāsa Vilāsa with
millions of beautiful damsels, which are her desires!"
40-41 "Kṛṣṇa's navel isn't a lake!" the Śuka replies. "It's a nectar well, and the fine hairs and portion below his navel are the ropes and bucket for drawing the well's nectar. Thus, the Creator nourishes the thirsty cows of the Gopīs' eyes!"
Kalokti exclaims, "The Creator made the blue lotus mortar of Kṛṣṇa's waist to separate the rice of the Gopīs' minds from the husk of other thoughts. So let this thin waist's lustrous beauty always appear in our minds!"
42-43 Mañjuvāk says, "When chivalrous Kāmadeva desired to defeat Śiva, he worshipped the Creator, who granted him a Ḍāmaru drum. This drum looks just like Kṛṣṇa's waist with his broad chest above and wide hips below!"
Kalokti: "The Creator gave his fresh youth to Kṛṣṇa's midsection and shaped it
like the letter 'X' between his broad hips and broad chest."
Mañjuvāk says, "Seeing Kṛṣṇa's waist, the lions feared that their elegant waists
would become objects of mockery. Thus, they fled to the Himālayan caves and hid
themselves there!"
44-45 "Aha! What splendor!" exclaims Kalokti, "Kṛṣṇa's navel is a deep lake
filled with streams of loveliness and whirlpools of raving beauty! So, it's not
surprising that the elephants of the Vraja kiśorīs' minds bathe there and want
never to come out!"
"I see things differently," replies the Śuka, "Kṛṣṇa's navel resembles the
honey-filled hollow of a Tamāla tree where the greedy bee-eyes of the Gopīs
enter and never return."
46-47 Kalokti says, "When Bali Mahārāja praised Vāmana Deva, seeing the Gaṅgā flowing from his lotus feet, Yamunā Devi became jealous. Thus, she reappeared from Kṛṣṇa's navel lake as the Romāvalī line of black hairs. Although Gaṅgā received the praise of one Bali, Kṛṣṇa's Yamunā Romāvalī is praised by three -the stunning tri-Bali (three lines) on his tummy! Hence, Śrī Yamunāji washes away all other desires and bestows Kṛṣṇa Bhakti on all those who bathe in her."
48-49 Mañjuvāk says, "A black Romāvalī snake is crawling from the hole in Kṛṣṇa's
tummy! Although she's small and thin, she breathes the mental airs of those who
view her!"
Kalokti replies, "When the young bees or the Gopīs' eyes drink the saundarya
madhu (the honey of beauty) of Kṛṣṇa 's lotus navel, they become intoxicated
and unable to fly, so they fall asleep on the lotus petal of Kṛṣṇa's belly to
form his Romāvalī."
Ṭīkā: The Śārī says, "O Śuka! Never compare a frightening object with Kṛṣṇa's
bodily limbs! You need not mention the snake!" Hence, the Śārī describes Krishna's
Romāvalī, using another example.
As the Śuka and the Śārī describe Kṛṣṇa's madhura Aṅga, Rādhikā and her Sakhīs
direct their attention to each limb as it is eulogized. Beause most of the examples
are related to the Sakhīs, this documents their special Prema and good fortune.
And in the places where Rādhā is specifically mentioned, these descriptions
show the superexcellence of her Prema, as well as Kṛṣṇa's supreme fortune.
50-51 Mañjuvāk says, "Kṛṣṇa's belly and Romāvalī are gorgeous like the
universal Jaya Lakṣmī, the Goddess of Victory. So why wouldn't they defeat the charm
of a peepal leaf, or a blue lotus petal, and attract everyone's attention?"
Kalokti replies, "Kṛṣṇa's sleek belly is more fragrant and softer than a new Tamāla
leaf coated with musk. Thus, it allures everyone's bee-eyes."
52-53 Mañjuvāk: "The river of Śṛṅgāra Rāsa flows from Kṛṣṇa's mountain chest
into the lake of his navel as a line of fine, black hairs. Both sides are raised
and slightly lowered in the center. May Śrī Kṛṣṇa's mid section illumine my
mind!"
Kalokti: "Kṛṣṇa's lotus-navel shines in the beautiful sarovar of his belly.
It's the playground for Rādhikā's Mano-Haṁsa (swan-mind) and minnow-eyes. The
calling swans of Kṛṣṇa's kāñchī (waistbells) jingle on its shores, the tri-Bali
are its waves, and its elegance is like an amrta pravaha (nectar stream)."
