1-11 A description of Śarata, Hemanta and Śīta forests
1-2 Thereafter, Kṛṣṇa comes to the Śarata-sukhada-Kuñja, and tells Rādhā: "O Priye! This forest resembles a girl's beauty at puberty. Her monsoon childhood has passed and now her adolescent beauty awakens in the autumn forest."
Ṭīkā: The sight of the Varṣā and Śarata's forest beauty reminds Kṛṣṇa of Kiśorī-maṇi Śrīmatī Rādhārānī's vaya-sandhī (puberty). Thus, he says to her, "O Priye! A girl's features become most captivating when she becomes a nava Kiśorī. Thus, this forest reminds me of you."
3 Kṛṣṇa continues: "Priye! Just observe the honeybees' behavior. They leave the
flowerless Yūthikā latās in search of new flowers, just as a lusty man forgets
an aging woman to enjoy with a pretty young girl.
4 O Prāṇa-Priye! Look how this Aṭavī displays autumn's opulence! The red guñjā
berries are ripening, peacock feathers lay scattered everywhere, and the white Kāśa
flowers decorate the ground. As the sky is devoid of rainclouds, the peacocks
are silent-yet the swans call melodiously."
Ṭīkā: When the soft, white Kāśa flowers fall on the ground they make an ideal flower bed (keli-talpa). Kṛṣṇa mentions this and autumn's other romantic sights to incite Śrīmati's desire for vilāsa.
5 Hey Sumukhi! When I searched each Gopī for my flute-they excitedly fled as I
tried to touch them! But as a bee soars from flower to flower on the Śephalikā
vines-the flowers fall from his touch."
6 Kuṇḍalatā says, "Hey Vṛndāvaneśvara and Vṛndāvaneśvari! Just see how your Sakhī
(the Śarata season) wonderfully decorates the forest!"
7 Oh Yugala Kiśora! Look! Śarata Lakṣmī is personally coming to serve you! The hummingbirds are her restless eyes, the lotus flowers are her face, the darting bees are her curling hair, the playful Cakravākas are her breasts, the white clouds are her dress, the Raktotpala (red lotus) are her lips, the calling cranes form her moon-necklace and the Nīlotpala (blue lotus) are her earrings!"
8 "Śarata-Lakṣmī offers you Raṅgana-and Jati flower ornaments, lily hair
decorations and red and blue lotus ear-decorations, and then she spreads her Śephalikā
flowers over the Nikuñja Gṛha's (forest cottages) floor to make your flower bed.
9-10 "Just see! Kandarpa Rāja's 'Autumn elephant is approaching! His elixir is the
Chātima tree's fragrance, he's covered with a blanket of white clouds, the Kāśa
flowers are his whisks, the lusty bulls, bees and birds call like his ringing
necklace, the cooing cranes form his waist-bells and the singing swans are his
anklebells."
Ṭīkā: When a king goes travelling, his elephant is attractively decorated with an expensive blanket, whisks, and sweet, ringing bells, Kuṇḍalatā sees the forest's beauty as Kandarpa Rāja's intoxicated Gaja Rāja. Thus she speaks to incite Rādhā Śyāma's desire for vilāsa keli! After all, their Prema Līlā does resemble a Gaja Rāja's love affairs with his many mates.
11 Kuṇḍalatā continues, "Viṣṇu is massaged by Padma (Lakṣmī) and he is the shelter of the Paramahāmsas who wields a chakra. Similarly, the autumn forest is the Padma (lotus)'s abode, it has sporting Cakravāka-birds and it gives shelter to the Haṁsas (swans)."Ṭīkā: Kuṇḍalatā hints that because the forest resembles Viṣṇu's body, surely it will fulfill your inner desires.
